Readers must be aware of text structures to be successful. Text structure is the arrangement of ideas and the relationship among ideas. Without teaching text structure, students will approach text without a reading plan and miss crucial points and ideas.Readers who are aware of text structure expect and are ready for the information to unfold in certain ways.
Students learn text starting with narrative, moving on to story line, following with reading for information.
Text features can help readers locate and organize information (ie. headings - which can help them hold bits of information for later reference).
The text structure is broken down as follows: Description
                                                                         Sequence
                                                                         Compare and contrast
                                                                          Cause and effect
                                                                         Problem/solution
The use of graphic organizers for each new organizational pattern lets them be able to work on text and write based on these organizers. Of course, we have to model first.
Teachers should teach text structure in the following steps:
1. Introduce text structure above
2. Introduce single text structure in each lesson
3. Short passage
4. Highlight signal words and phrases.
5. Look for clues and write a short paragraph
6. Model ready made graphic organizer
7. Allow students to use an empty graphic organizer from a passage

We as teachers need to get students to recognize the FUN  in predicting what they think they will see in the text coming up. We can use expository text structure to rank normal acheivers -in their ability to read, comprehend, analyze.
